Athens Georgia: Musicians Band Together To Fight Walmart
February 4, 2012 - Athens Georgia is in the news with some of it’s residents up in arms over the proposed new 94,000 sq ft Walmart to be developed in downtown Athens. This will be the third Walmart in Athens all within about a 4 mile radius of downtown, not counting the old abandoned Walmart.
Athens is the home of the University of Georgia Bulldogs and home to the first and most famous college music scene in the country, beginning in the 1970s.The formation of local bands like the B-52s, Ravenstone, Azure Ray, Pylon, Dreams So Real, Drive-by Truckers, Widespread Panic, Indigo Girls, Love Tractor, the Georgia Satellites, and R.E.M. had brought Athens rock to national attention by 1980.
