47% Of Detroit Residents Are Functionally Illiterate
May 5, 2011 - (Updated May 8, 2011) – According to a new report, 47% of Detroit residents can’t read. Lucky for them, McDonald’s has pictures. We can thank our government schools and the government teacher’s unions for Detroit’s failure. Remember – government schools were designed just about 100 years ago for the purpose of educating our children just to the point that they would make good and obedient government subjects.
Want more bad news about our government education system? From the Department of Education, as reported in the New York Times:
Fewer than half of American eighth graders knew the purpose of the Bill of Rights on the most recent national civics examination, and only one in 10 demonstrated acceptable knowledge of the checks and balances among the legislative, executive and judicial branches, according to test results released on Wednesday.
At the same time, three-quarters of high school seniors who took the test, the National Assessment of Educational Progress, were unable to demonstrate skills like identifying the effect of United States foreign policy on other nations or naming a power granted to Congress by the Constitution.
By the way – Don’t think for a second that I am letting parents off the hook here. Basic education begins and ends in the home. Regardless of how poorly your school system is, you the parent, are ultimately responsible for your child’s education. As bad an enemy as the NEA is to the destruction of our Government education system, you are the one who chose the government to educate your kid. If you can afford beer, cigarettes, cable tv, and that cell phone contract, then you damn well can afford private education. If not, then maybe it’s time to get your priorities in order and think about your kid for once in your life.
Bottom line – me and millions of other hard working American’s are sick of paying for the end result in your failure as a responsible parent.
At least Obama can rest easy with those Detroit statistics knowing that those are some of the same people who voted him into office – And they are the same ones that will try to do it again.
Like comedian Ron White said – “You can’t fix stupid.”
